Kobbie Mainoo has played just 20 minutes in an England shirt yet he's already claimed a certain honour before 80-cap legend Gary Lineker.

The Manchester United starlet continued his stunning rise to the top by making his senior Three Lions debut against Brazil on Saturday.

The 18-year-old has only made 23 appearances for Erik ten Hag's side this term before taking to Wembley in the 1-0 defeat.

Mainoo had been drafted into the senior set-up from the U21s just four days before making his England bow.

The midfielder was one of three England debuts against Brazil, with Gareth Southgate also honouring Anthony Gordon and Ezri Konsa.

The trio's appearance have since seen them provided with commemorative England legacy caps.

The special red velvet caps all come with an individual legacy number embroidered on the front to mark a player's spot in England's history.

In a video shared on X, Southgate said: “Three lads making their debut. Those of you who have got 40 or 50 caps plus, you remember that moment and what that was like.

“An unbelievable memory for you. You join me now at numbers 1278, 1279, 1280. Going back through the Bobby Charlton's, the Bobby Moore's, that's the club you join.

“So, Anthony congratulations. Ez, at 20 minutes in, you come on and mark Vinicius Jr. That's not a bad start to life (as an international).”

England adopted the tradition of legacy numbers to mark the team's 1000th game in November 2019 - with debutants only receiving caps from September 2021 onwards.

As a result, the hundreds of ex-England players have had to wait patiently to be gifted one for their historical exploits.

Alan Shearer was honoured with his own while in attendance at Wembley, but former strike partner Lineker, who scored 48 goals in 80 outings for the Three Lions, is still without one.

Upon a clip of Mainoo receiving his, Lineker revealed on his Rest Is Football podcast, which he co-hosts alongside Shearer and Micah Richards: “The three of us all had a special treat on Saturday night.

“We were all at Wembley for the England-Brazil game in the royal box and when I say treat, I’m talking about everything around the game. Not necessarily the game itself.

“There was a special event to celebrate the life of Terry Venables and the Euro 96 squad he coached and our very own Alan Shearer even picked up his legacy England cap.

“Tell us what that is Alan because I haven’t got one yet.

“I didn’t even know it was a thing.”
