No response to questions on why penalty shoot out was at Charlton Athletic home end in crucial play-off match

There has been no response to questions from the Doncaster Free Press as to what safety concerns forced Doncaster Rovers’ penalty shoot out to played in front of the Charlton Athletic home end in their play-off semi-final match.

After an incredibly dramatic match in which Doncaster beat Charlton 3-2 on the day, making it all evens on aggregate, the game went to a penalty shoot-out. Usually, there will be a coin toss to decide which end the shoot-out will take place with teams usually electing to have it front of their own fans to avoid distractions. However in this case due to safety concerns relayed to referee Gavin Ward by matchday safety officers, the shoot out was played in front of the home end.

With Doncaster eventually losing the shoot out, plenty of fans were not happy with this. Club captain Tommy Rowe, who missed a penalty, and goalkeeper Marko Marosi were also not happy with what happened though head coach Grant McCann said he had no issue despite being surprised with what happened.

Following this, local newspaper the Doncaster Free Press sent a series of questions about what the safety concerns were, who made the decision, when it was made and who knew about it to Charlton and to the EFL. As of the time of publishing, they are yet to receive any response to their questions from either party. This is only going to increase frustrations within the Doncaster fan base who may now believe they were done out of a potential promotion at Wembley this weekend.
